The fun part about planning your ’round the world trip is deciding where to go. However, this can also be a tiresome on deciding what countries you want to visit the most. You have 1 year time, you have so many places you want to visit, how do you decide where you want to go and how long you’ll be staying in one location? When you think about it, 1 year isn’t really that long to see the “whole” world so you’ve got to make choices on your destinations.
Once you’ve got your destinations, you’ve got to find the most efficient route to travel to each of those destinations without wasting time on taking detours and what not. That’s why having some sort of schedule and map of your route would give you a lot of clarity and will help you plan your trip. To be honest, I haven’t mapped out my own route yet. At the moment I’m still thinking about what places to visit and how long I would want to visit each country. To help me out, I try to plan my visit according to the “best” time to visit. For some countries, I choose to visit them just because it’s warmer there during that time of year. For example visiting South-America during the winter. For other countries I would decide based on the festivities that will be going on during the year. For example visiting Japan during the spring to catch the Cherry Blossom festival. Or try to witness the Songkran festival in Thailand, traditional New Year’s Day from 13 to 15 april. Eventhough I try my best to visit each region or country during the best time to visit, I do realise I can’t plan my route that perfectly. I guess I could but that also means that I’ll have to stick to a strict schedule when traveling around. I’d rather set some fixed points and dates and leave the rest up to faith. This makes the trip more flexible and less time-constraining. One thing I’ve learned from my past trips that it’s good to have a plan but it’s ok to deviate from that plan from time to time. On to the planning and mapping of my route. So far there are a couple of places I want to visit or witness. So I’ll probably set these points on a map and connect the dots, based on that I’ll think about what else there is to visit between those dots. So here is the list:
- Songkran (Thai new year)
- Cherry Blossom festival
- Angkor Wat
- Tubing in Laos
- Go to a jungle at least once
- Machu Picchu
- Himalaya’s
- Travel through Japan by train and ride the boat to South-Korea
- Harbin Ice Festival (probably won’t make this :[ )
This might not be a lot at first but I’m sure that along the rest of my planning I’ll be able to find more things worthwhile to visit. But like I said, these are some key destinations and events. The rest is up to faith. So how do you guys plan your route? How do you decide where to travel when?
