Bright lights and neons in Hong Kong, cliff jumping and visit to cat cafe

Hong Kong is my last stop on my 1 year travel around the world. It’s not a stop that I intended to visit because my parents are from Hong Kong and I’ve been here several times before. It was a required stop on my way back to Belgium. In the previous visits I haven’t ever really traveled around in Hong Kong. Most of the time, I’ve just been visiting relatives, taking care of paperwork, eating and shopping. So I had no idea what Hong Kong really had to offer. This time around I wanted to really TRAVEL in Hong Kong....

They got McDonald's in the rest of the world? In China we got KUNGFU! 0

Wuxi

Since this was a semi unexpected stop, I had no idea what to expect from Wuxi. I was expecting some “small” city under development with no real sights worth visiting. But I obviously underestimated the power of Chinese people to set up tall high rise buildings like they were made out of lego. I met up with Steven, a friend from back in Belgium, who’s going to be working here for 3 months. He’s been here before for a few months prior to this, but didn’t really get the chance to actually act like a tourist. He had a few...

Shanghai revisited

In 2008 during the summer Olympics, I spent 2 and a half months in Shanghai doing an internship. During that time I’ve pretty much seen most of what Shanghai had to offer. After the internship, I traveled to Beijing after the olympics to visit the historical city in China. This time I came back with the idea to visit old friends living here. But sadly, some of them had already moved back to Europe. Luckily I had another friend working in Wuxi for a few months, so I decided to hop on the train spend a few days with him....

Cat cafe & trick art museum in Seoul – Must do!

Trick art museum For some reason, trick art museums haven’t really taken off in other countries, but in South-Korea, they seem to be pretty big. In fact, there are 2 of them (maybe even 3) in Seoul alone and I’m sure there was one on Jeju island too. Eventhough they house different artworks, the concept is pretty much the same so I only visited one of them in Seoul. As the name explains it, the museum consist of paintings and artworks where there is “some trick” to it. More than often this means that the 2-D paintings seem to have...

Historical relics around Heyri art village 1

Seoul Heyri Art Village

It’s quite unusual that I spend a whole post talking about 1 place, but I just had too many pictures of the Heyri art village to add another topic to this. And to top things off, some of the galleries weren’t even open! Anyway, to start things off: Heyri art village is a little “village” a few kilometers outside of central Seoul. It looked like they took a piece of empty land and decided to make it an art village out of nowhere, good idea to me it seems. All the buildings have their own unique design and consist of...

I’ve got Seoul baby!

Finally made it to Seoul, my last stop in South Korea before moving on to China. My travels in Seoul are actually divided into 3 blogposts since there was so much to do here and mainly because I took so many pictures. In this post I’ll just give you a general overview of Seoul for now. Check out the Heyri Art Village and the cat cafe and trick art museum. Being the capital of South Korea, there must be a palace for me to visit right? In fact, there were 2 of them! The most prominent one called Gyeongbok-gung also...

Daegu & Jeonju

Daegu Daegu in itself doesn’t really have much to offer. The reason I decided to stop by here was only because I had some time to kill before meeting up with my friend in Jeonju. On top of it, I managed to get a couchsurfer to host me for a few days. Not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but for each country I visit, I try to stay with a local couchsurfer for a few days to get a grasp of every day life in their country. Since this was one of the last chances for me and she...

Gyeongju & Andong

Gyeong Ju This little historical town is most famous for its royal tombs called tumuli. what’s so special about these tombs is that they are made up of big piles of sand and depending on the importance of the person who is buried, the bigger tomb of course. Personally I wasn’t really impressed by these tombs so I didn’t really spend that much time in Gyeongju. I did rent a bike and went around the tombs and other touristic spots such as the Bulguksa, yet another Unesco World Heritage temple. The bike ride there was quite misleading though, since I...

Busan & Jeju island

Busan was the first stop in South-Korea after Japan. To be totally honest, I was pretty beat from traveling around so much in Japan. I’ve seen a lot of mountains, done some really nice hikes and visited a good amount of temples. And not to bring South-Korea down, but it is pretty much the same here, of course there are some cultural differences to be find. Nevertheless, the first couple of days I just chilled in Busan and figured out my plan for the next destinations. Though I did manage to find some stuff to do while I was here....

Hiroshima & Miyajima

I don’t exactly know why I visited Hiroshima. I mean don’t know anything about the war between the USA and Japan nor do I know the exact reason why Hiroshima was bombed to hell. But I guess it was just one of cities you just “had” to visit when you’re in Japan. For some reason, a trip to Hiroshima seemed the obvious choice when you visit Japan. Considering it’s tragic past and worldwide coverage of the atombomb incident back in 1945. Personally I don’t really know much about the reason behind the bombing nor do I have any interest in...
