Asian flashpacker – Thailand (pre-trip)

So for my birthday I rewarded myself with a trip (back) to Thailand. I’m bringing a friend who’s never been to Thailand before and to be honest, this time around I just wanted to relax and take it easy. Compared to my previous travels where I was being the adventurous backpacker, I decided that this time I’d up my comfort level a bit more and become…. Asian flashpacker! Eventhough this is relax and tourist vacation trip, I still wanted to check out some places I haven’t been to before. Touching down in Bangkok, I’m gonna try to put in the...

7days to go 0

7 days to D-DAY

Time is flying! It’s been a while since my last post here. It’s my last week in cold Belgium before heading for the sun! Last Friday Dec, 6th was my very last working day! It ended in a very long day *_*I had a nice farewell drink with my colleageas around 5.30pm (office closes at 6pm) meaning that work was waiting to be finished. My boss gave a me a compass as farewell gift. You would think he meant something with this gift 😉 Don’t you worry Bob, I’ll know my way back to work after 6 months..I think 😀 Thanks...

My travel medical kit 1

Vaccines and Medications Most people go the ITG (Institute of Tropical Medicine) for informations regarding vaccines and medications. A few years ago, when I went to South America, I did the same. They are very professional and you get the shots on the spot. (TIP: bring something to read as waiting time can be quite long, 1-2 hours waiting time is no exeption) If you want to spend your time better, than just go to there website. Look up your destination and you’ll get a list of needed vaccines. Print it out, go to your regular doctor who will prescibe...

My first expenses

Tickets I decided to just buy a return ticket BRU-BKK/SHA-BRU. As I work at a travel agency (yep, I do :-)), I could get a serious discount if flying with KLM. As so I got my ticket for a bit less than €500, where the normal price would have been +/- €900. Travel Insurance You can’t go on a long trip without a good travel insurance. Through my work I bought the year insurance World Gold Protection with Allianz Global Assistance. But because such insurance only insures 3 consecutive months of travel abroad, and I was traveling for 6 months, I had...

First things first 0

First things first

Once you’ve decided to take a long holiday, the very first thing you need to do is of course let your boss know about it. If he doesn’t agree, everything stops there. The very first time I gave my boss a hint about my decision was on Apr 6th, 2011. He didn’t faint, that was a good sign 😉 It wasn’t until a year later that I kindly ‘reminded’ him about our little chat back then. Because I was the only accountant in the company, we needed to talk about which arrangements must be made for during my absence. We started...

How to look for the right accomodation

Traveling for a year sounds fun to most people if not all people, but what many people don’t know is that it’s also freaking TIRING! There are so many things to take care of and organise, especially if you’re traveling by yourself. Research on the city/country you’re visiting, the language, money exchange, necessary visa, transport and most importantly accomodation. When I was still traveling, I lived by 1 rule. As long as I have a roof over my head then I’m all good. That’s why it’s important to find a good place to stay at to be able to do...

My packing list

The last couple of days I’ve got all the rest of my stuff for my trip and “test-packed” my backpacks. That way I’ll know if I’ll have some space left or have to leave some stuff behind. I’ve actually packed my bags 3 times and everytime you find new ways to save spaces or manage to fit something extra in there or create some extra space. Main backpack contains: Clothes 1 North Face windbreaker jacket (not in picture) 1 Fleece sweater 1 North Face base layer 2 North Face shirts 3 t-shirts (wearing 1) 2 North Face zip-off cargo pants...

Last big purchase 4

Last big purchases

Today I went and got my last expensive purchases and additional equipment. Asus eeePC netbook 2 microfiber towels (s+xl) Haglöfs fleece sweater Deuter Gogo daypack Nikon D3100 DSLR + 18-105mm lens I actually got the DSLR a few weeks ago, but forgot to add it to the list before. It might be bulky to bring along, but the quality of the pictures make up for it. I do plan to bring my little Casio Exelim snapshot camera for random snapshots and in “dangerous situations where I don’t want to bring out my DSLR to take pictures. With this, I pretty...

Estimated Departure Time – 22 days!

Departure is less than a month from now and things are getting busy now! The last couple of weeks I’ve been busy finish the extra projects and finishing the (last) preparations. Destinations and the necessary visa Since I have most of my destinations set in stone, I could start taking care of the needed administrative form (hassle) for each country I’m visiting. HOWEVER! Luckily, I have European citizenship, meaning for a lot of countries I don’t need a visa. Well mainly the South-American countries. For the countries I’m visiting in Asia, I could just apply on arrival. Or the next...

Long due update

So I’ve sorta gone back to my old habits. Neglecting my blog and neglecting updates. Not that nothing has happened since my last post. However, since I was working my full time job, I just didn’t have the time or motivation (at the time) to organise everything for my trip. However now it’s different, lemme give you guys a quick update on what happened the last couple of months / weeks. Work It’s been about a week since I quit my job as Search marketing consultant. Looking back at the date, it seemed like forever eventhough it’s only been a...
