Coming back home after a gap-year around (half) the world

It’s been nearly 2 months since I came back from my 1 year round (half) the world trip. The first month I was pretty much just busy meeting up with friends to tell them about my experiences and hearing from them what has changed in a year time. You’d think that 1 year is long, but when you’re traveling for a year, everything passes by so fast. When people asked me about some stories and experiences from my trip, I often don’t know where to begin the story. One of the most difficult and rather annoying question is asking me...

Traveling alone and meeting people

At first when I told people I was going to travel alone, most people wondered if I’d be lonely on the road without anyone to talk to and visit places with. After more than 4 weeks traveling, I can tell you that traveling alone certainly has its ups and downs. It just depends how you cope with it. But you’re never really lonely if you put in some effort. This also highly depends on your personality and your social skills of course. For me it’s been rather easy to talk to people and meet new people. Hostels You’d be suprised...

Last big purchase 4

Last big purchases

Today I went and got my last expensive purchases and additional equipment. Asus eeePC netbook 2 microfiber towels (s+xl) Haglöfs fleece sweater Deuter Gogo daypack Nikon D3100 DSLR + 18-105mm lens I actually got the DSLR a few weeks ago, but forgot to add it to the list before. It might be bulky to bring along, but the quality of the pictures make up for it. I do plan to bring my little Casio Exelim snapshot camera for random snapshots and in “dangerous situations where I don’t want to bring out my DSLR to take pictures. With this, I pretty...

Parting gift!

I had a goodbye dinner with some of my closest friends last night. Eventhough I’m not a person that likes to be the center of attention, it was a nice evening and opportunity to gettogether since most of us are so busy. Anyhow, they got me a parting gift! They’re value coupons at an electronic/book shop in Belgium for the purchase of my netbook. The book is book with images of all kinds of things, just in case you don’t know the exact word for something in any language, you can just look it up and point at it. Hence...

Estimated Departure Time – 22 days!

Departure is less than a month from now and things are getting busy now! The last couple of weeks I’ve been busy finish the extra projects and finishing the (last) preparations. Destinations and the necessary visa Since I have most of my destinations set in stone, I could start taking care of the needed administrative form (hassle) for each country I’m visiting. HOWEVER! Luckily, I have European citizenship, meaning for a lot of countries I don’t need a visa. Well mainly the South-American countries. For the countries I’m visiting in Asia, I could just apply on arrival. Or the next...

Telling your friends 0

Informing your family and friends

When you tell people that you’ll be leaving on a 1-year trip around the world, you’ll get various reactions from them. Most people are very supportive and admire the idea of being on vacation for 1 year. But when they let the idea sink in a bit longer, other thoughts come to mind. More positive ones and less positive ones. Lets begin with the positive, good and feel-good reactions. “Wow really? That’s awesome!” Those are the best reactions, I’ve gotta be honest about that. It’s not that I wanna make them jealous or anything, but it’s just that I’m glad...

Long due update

So I’ve sorta gone back to my old habits. Neglecting my blog and neglecting updates. Not that nothing has happened since my last post. However, since I was working my full time job, I just didn’t have the time or motivation (at the time) to organise everything for my trip. However now it’s different, lemme give you guys a quick update on what happened the last couple of months / weeks. Work It’s been about a week since I quit my job as Search marketing consultant. Looking back at the date, it seemed like forever eventhough it’s only been a...

Why go backpacking? 0

Why backpacking ’round the world?

There comes a time in everyone’s life when you realise that you should or could do more with your life than just doing the same routine everyday over and over. Whether it be work or school. You feel that the place you live in is too small for you. You want to see the world, you want to experience new things, you want to go explore, you want to go on an adventure! And finally you are willing to take that step to go on new adventures, to travel the world to go back to basics and leave your home,...
